Build-A-Thon 2018 – Rising to the Challenge

Posted on 03/03/2018 by Christopher Kitson in News

At the E-Week Build-A-Thon this past Wednesday, teams competed in three teamwork and competitive design challenges that are easy to learn, but hard to master, and had a great time doing it. These design challenges were Balloon Towers hosted by NSBE, Space Sculptures hosted by ASME, Lifting Prosthesis hosted by MESS.

Teams of up to four people had 25 minutes to make each prototype, and were tasked with building the best design they could conceive using the supplied materials. Prizes were awarded to the best team at each build station & to the most spirited team, and included a SNAP Gift card and 3D-Printed gear train for the team that

won the prize.

Everyone who attend had loads of fun, and there was more than enough pizza and building supplies to go around. Although attendance was lower than last year, each team that competed found their niche and was able to walk home with their neat creation and prizes to boot.

This event was hosted by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the Mechanical Engineer Student Squad (MESS), and the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). Many thanks to Dean Shermeyer’s Office in the College of Engineering for helping fund the purchase of food and other supplies, and for the Office of Communications and Marketing for preparing a recap video.

Thank you for everyone who came out, and for all the volunteers who worked behind the scenes to make this event happen! Hopefully we will see you at more ASME Fun Events, and at the E-Week Build-A-Thon next year!

Mini-Pumpkin Chunkin

Posted on 11/03/2017 by Christopher Kitson in News

This Monday, evening engineers descended on the Pit in Spencer Lab for some spooktacular fun! In the spirit of the collegiate Pumpkin Chunkin hosted the Friday prior, teams of participants fashioned their own siege machines to hurl small mellocreme pumpkins across the room.Teams were given supplies such as dowels, spoons, wheels, and rubber bands combined with hot glue guns and tape to make their designs a reality. Plenty of candy, pizza, and refreshments were provided to fuel everyone’s ambitions. The competitors’ resulting entries ranged from catapults to trebuchets to onagers as everyone flexed their creative muscles.

Congratulations to our winners: Arnav Prasad and Mathew Heebner for making the catapult that launched the farthest! Thank you to all the ASME & MESS volunteers who came out to helped make this event possible, and Dr. Buckley for additional supplies. This fun event was co-hosted by ASME UD & MESS. Stay tuned for details for our next fun event!

Build-A-Thon Builds On

Posted on 02/22/2017 by Christopher Kitson in News
Some say build it and they will come, we engineers know you only need to buy the supplies and plenty of food to attract a crowd. As evidence, more than 80 people showed up at the E-Week Build-A-Thon 2017 to build their own creations, or simply to watch others do the same. Either way, everyone left having had a great time, and slightly more full in both belly and mind
At the Build-A-Thon this year, we had four main stations, including three fun building challenges. First, there was the NSBE marshmallow towers competition where teams were tasked with building the tallest structure out of skewers and toothpicks; the tallest one nearly grazed the ceiling. Second, there was the ASME catapult competition where teams were challenged to hurl a jumbo marshmallow as far as they could; one team out distanced the room we were in. Thirdly, there was the MESS buoyancy competition; two teams never reached their limits since we ran out of weights to use. In addition, there was a food and information section where pizza, soda, & ME125 ice cream was served, along with a table advertising ASME & NSBE activities as well as upcoming events.

Still, it is important this event could not have happend without a lot of help and planning beforehand; this year, ASME, MESS & NSBE coordinated planning, spearheaded by ASME. Thank you to the University of Delaware College of Engineering for their financial support, media support (including video recap), flyer printing, and countless hours of planning advice & assistance. Thank you to the Department of Mechanical Engineering for providing the two 2.5 gallon tubs of ME125 ice cream and making scarf sales possible. Furthermore, thank you to the dozen volunteers who came out to help make this event a success. Hopefully we’ll catch you at the ASME & Maker Series Woodworking Build-A-Thon that’s currently in the works!
